Kihumuro Development
Institute Ltd

Technical education and digital infrastructure for the Kigezi highlands.

Kihumuro Development Institute is a not-for-profit organisation establishing a technical training institute and community campus at Kihumuro Hill, Kabale, in south-west Uganda.

Kihumuro Hill, Kabale District, Kigezi sub-region, Uganda

What we are building

Kigezi sits at the junction of Uganda, Rwanda and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with fibre connectivity, reliable grid power and a new regional airport under construction. It has the conditions to become a centre for digital skills and services in the Great Lakes region, but young people currently leave to find that training elsewhere.

The Institute exists to change that. We are developing a campus at Kihumuro Hill that combines a vocational training institute with the live digital infrastructure students learn on, so that qualifications are earned alongside real equipment and real employers.

Vocational training institute

Accredited courses in data centre operations, electrical and cooling systems, network engineering and cybersecurity, designed with employers in Uganda and Rwanda and taught on working equipment.

Digital skills for the community

Short courses and open sessions for secondary-school leavers, teachers, small businesses and local government staff across Kabale and neighbouring districts, delivered on campus and online.

Regional research and collaboration

A base for partners, universities and public bodies working on connectivity, sovereign data and sustainable power in the region, with meeting and conferencing facilities hosted by the Institute.

Kihumuro Hill

The campus site is a hilltop plot beside the Kabale broadcasting mast, about ten kilometres from the Katuna border with Rwanda and ninety kilometres from Kigali. Carrier fibre already reaches the plot, a 132 kV substation serves the district, and the Mombasa–Kigali highway passes below.

The master plan includes training halls, a conference and training centre, staff and student accommodation, and a small hospitality block for visiting partners. Development is phased, beginning with the training facilities and the first technical hall.
